Welcome to Asian American Poetry and Writing. We're here because:

literature is important

you want to be a writer

you don't know any writers

you're tired of not seeing yourself

anywhere

books are intimate

being exoticized is so yesterday

your brother is a doctor

and your sister, too

you might not live in San Francisco, Los Angeles, or New York

if you are asked, "No, where are you really from?" one more time

all literature is ethnic

you trust their book recommendations like you do their restaurant recommendations

you don't have a trust fund

you need your own room sometimes

it's never to late (or too early) to write

parents just don't understand

it's so exhausting being the only one

you speak English

well

but your parents might not

you have to write

writing is breathing

identity is complicated

stories make us real

At AAPW, we understand that using a historically-rich term like Asian American is both useful and problematic. It is convenient for marketing―we do focus on under-represented Asian diasporic literature―but could be interpreted as artificial or worse, divisive. However, through cutting-edge interviews, reviews, articles, essays, and conversations about literature, we do hope to re-imagine what it means to be Asian American―geographically, ethnically, "racially"―in the 21st century. We see Asian America as a starting point to discussions about migration, identity, and art. It is a perspective and NOT a destination. A doorway not a door.

In other words, everyone is welcome here.
